Sidekick and Magic get treated as the same thing constantly. They are two different products with two different jobs, and there is one part of your store neither of them can touch.

Shopify ships two AI products and almost nobody keeps them straight. Sidekick is the chat assistant in your admin. Magic is the writing and image tool built into the fields you already use. People say "Shopify AI" and mean one, the other, or both.
They do different jobs. There's also one part of your store neither of them will touch, and that's the part worth knowing before you decide either one is enough.
Worth saying who's writing this. We build Qosmic, which works on the other side of that line, on the storefront rather than the admin. So we've spent more time than is healthy mapping exactly where Shopify's own tools stop. What follows is a fair account of what they do, because you can't make a useful decision from a hatchet job.
What Sidekick is
Sidekick is a free AI assistant inside the Shopify admin. You open a chat panel, ask a question in plain English, and it answers using your store's data. It's been rolling out progressively since 2023 and the 2026 releases are by far the most capable version, so if you tried it early and wrote it off, that judgment is out of date.
You'll find it in the top bar of your admin. No install, no setup, no extra cost on any plan.
The 2026 version does more than answer. It executes multi-step tasks, carries store-wide context, drafts campaigns, adjusts pricing rules, and creates discount codes from a sentence. It hooks into Shopify Flow, so you can describe an automation and have it built. It'll even generate custom admin apps from a prompt, and merchants built more than 12,000 of them in the first quarter of 2026 alone.
Shopify reported weekly active shops using Sidekick up 385% year over year. Whatever else is true, merchants are using it.
What Sidekick is genuinely good at
Three things, and it's worth being specific because the hype around it is not.
Asking your data questions without building a report. "Which products had the biggest drop in units sold last month?" Most merchants can't build that in the analytics UI. In chat it takes ten seconds. This is the strongest thing Sidekick does.
Admin work you'd otherwise click through. Discount codes, pricing rules, bulk edits, campaign drafts. Tedious, repetitive, form-shaped work.
First drafts. Product descriptions, email copy, social posts. Not finished work, but a starting point beats an empty box.
There's also Sidekick Skills, which lets you save a prompt you use often as a one-click shortcut. If you run the same three questions every Monday, that's a real time saving.
For a merchant with no ops help and a long list of small jobs, Sidekick is a straightforwardly good free tool. That's not a backhanded compliment. It's the correct assessment.
What Shopify Magic is, and how it differs
Magic isn't a chat window. It's AI woven into the fields you already fill in.
Writing a product description, you get a "generate" option that drafts one from a few words about the item, and you can pick a tone: professional, casual, playful, luxury. Newer versions reference your existing descriptions so the output sounds more like your other products. Same idea in Shopify Email for subject lines and body copy, in blog posts, and in landing page copy.
Magic also edits product images, removing or swapping backgrounds without you opening Photoshop.
The clean way to hold the difference: Sidekick is something you talk to. Magic is something that appears inside what you're already doing. Sidekick answers and acts on your admin. Magic writes and edits inside a field you already opened. Neither one builds the page that copy is meant to live on, which is the job Qosmic does from the same kind of plain-English prompt.
Both are free. Magic is included on every plan with fair-use limits on heavy generation, and a couple of features vary by plan tier.

The one thing neither of them touches
This is the bit that decides whether the free tools are enough for you.
Sidekick cannot access or edit your storefront. Not the theme, not the layout, not any visual element a customer sees. It can't write Liquid, it can't create pages, and it can't make design changes. Ask it to update your homepage hero or change your product page layout and it will tell you it can't (Fudge AI, Let's Talk Shop).
This isn't a gap Shopify forgot to fill. It's the boundary of the product. Sidekick works on the admin: your data, your orders, your discounts, your settings. The storefront is a different surface, owned by the Theme Editor.
A few other limits worth knowing before you rely on it:
- It's locked to Shopify. No Klaviyo, no GA4, no Google Ads, no Amazon. If your numbers live across several tools, Sidekick sees one of them. Qosmic reads GA4, Hotjar and Klaviyo alongside Shopify, which is a different picture of the same store.
- It only reads structured data. Products, orders, collections. It can't look at an image or judge what's in it.
- It rarely says "I don't know." Ask something ambiguous and you get a specific-sounding answer assembled from generic patterns. Merchants have reported technical SEO advice that was actively harmful, including misidentified canonicals and schema changes that broke validation.
- It won't act without you. Everything routes through review and approval. That's the right default, but it means Sidekick is never watching your store while you sleep.

Availability and pricing
Free. Both of them, on every Shopify plan, with fair-use limits on heavy generation.
Sidekick has been rolling out in stages since its 2023 announcement rather than launching on a single date, with the widest availability arriving through the 2026 editions. If it isn't in your admin yet, that's a rollout question, not a plan question.
When built-in AI is enough
If your problem is that admin work eats your week, Sidekick solves a real part of that, free, today. Turn it on.
If your problem is that people land on your store and don't buy, Sidekick isn't built for it, and no amount of prompting will change that. The pages losing you money are the ones it can't see.
That's the split. Back office versus shopfront.
The awkward thing about the shopfront half is that it's where the money actually leaks, and it's the half that needs somebody looking at it on a phone, on a Tuesday, noticing that a theme update quietly killed the sticky add-to-cart. Sidekick will never do that, because it isn't allowed to look.
This is the gap Qosmic was built for. It reads the storefront the way a buyer does, finds what's costing you sales, then builds the fix inside your own theme using your own components and stages it as a draft for you to approve. It pulls from GA4, Hotjar and Klaviyo rather than Shopify alone, tests changes against real revenue, and keeps watching after the change ships. Different surface, different job.
The honest version of the comparison isn't that Sidekick is bad at its job. It's that its job stops at the admin door, and the half that decides whether anyone buys is on the other side of it. Most people don't work that out until they've spent a month asking Sidekick to fix a product page.

The short version
Sidekick: chat in your admin. Answers questions about your data, drafts content, builds discounts and workflows, generates admin apps. Free.
Magic: AI inside the fields you already use. Writes descriptions and email copy, edits product images. Free.
Neither: touches your theme, your layout, your pages, or anything a customer sees.
Shopify and AI is a bigger story than these two products, and it's moving fast enough that any article about it has a shelf life. But the admin-versus-storefront line has held through every release so far, and it's the one worth planning around.
